Laquesha :  What Nightmares Are Made of “The Bedroom”

(My Mom’s Bedroom, before it became worse. 1/2025)

Shivering as her feet pitter-pattered on her way into the living room her expression of gladness transformed into sadness as Momma frowned and pointed back to the bedroom

She wanted to speak up, she wanted to scream, she wanted to say Mom you’re in the other room and your mean, but she knew better

Her body stiffened as she turned around and headed back to her Mom’s bedroom.  This time her feet quietly embraced the carpet, heel to toe, heel to toe, heel to toe, feeling the soft fibers of the carpet with each step a familiar growing fear of dread grew in her stomach.  With what felt like 30 steps she reached her Mom’s door in 4

Touching the doorknob with the tip of her finger, the door widened with a sharp creak; she knew the drill, she would walk in and there would be her Mom; the woman she loved, the woman who comforted her, the woman whom she couldn’t eat without knowing she was ok, whose sound of high heels hitting the pavement while embracing her in the early moon light was a better feeling than all the candy in the world

But it wouldn’t be her Mom, it would resemble her Mom but it would have snarled teeth, and red hair that stood straight up, with piercing black eyes and big red lips that were in the posture of a smile, and as she opened her mouth a laugh that would resembling a cry would screech like a scream as her contorted hands reached for me her nails sprawled in different directions like a twisted staircase that intertwined up and down, left and right, and motioned for me to come closer

And so she bit her lip and stepped inside with the hope that things would be different, eyes wide she saw what she had feared, closing them tightly, she spun around and leaped through the door slamming it behind her, BANG

Opening her eyes she saw the off-white textured ceiling, breathing hard, she sat up straight to the sound of her Mom’s laughter coming from the living room; wiping her sweat and tears from her face, with one bound she was out the bed and at her bedroom door peeking out to see her Mom partying with Autotune….
